About SMA Essential Exercises

With SMA essential exercises, we hope to provide inspiration and tips for those of you who are interested in training people with the neuromuscular disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
It is aimed at children and adults living with SMA. But also, other people around them who are involved in their training.

SMA essential exercises consists of simple exercises that can be done in the home environment.
The exercises have been chosen based on level of function and age. The functional levels we have used are whether the SMA Patient can sit with or without support, and whether he has the ability to walk independently (non-sitters, sitters and walkers). The exercises are also aimed at certain ages but can of course also be used if you are older or younger if the movement needs to be trained. Some exercises require that the Patient understands instructions, so you will have to make an assessment of whether an individual exercise suits the patient.

SMA essential exercises includes suggestions on how the exercises can be made easier or more difficult, should the degree of difficulty need to be adjusted.
We have deliberately not included any information about how many times, for how long or how often the exercises should be done. The patient’s strength and stamina must be the determining and guiding factors here.

In several of children the exercises, we recommend that toys are used to entice the child to take part in and carry out the exercises. Always make sure that the child is able to get hold of his toy in the end. It is important that the child feels that the effort required is worth it. It is also important that the exercises are safe. Make sure the risks of the child falling are minimized by remaining close by and being prepared to provide support if needed. And finally, but perhaps most important of all – the exercises should be fun!

However, Biogen is not responsible for any utilization of these exercises and any consequences such as, an example only, incorrect execution of the exercises.
By using these exercises, you agree with the terms of use of the SMA Essential Exercises Privacy Policy (biogen-gulf.com) The current treatment guidelines for SMA by Treat-NMD Network state that physiotherapy and rehabilitation exercises have benefits for both non-sitting, sitting, and walking people living with SMA1 Evidence shows that physiotherapy may have a positive impact on patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy2 According to a recent study, home-based progressive resistance training exercise is feasible, safe, and well tolerated in children and adults living with SMA3
